Mental health is our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. This affects how we think, act, and feel. This determines how we relate to others, make choices, and handle stress.
Winter brings darkness, and darkness is related to those who suffer from seasonal affective disorder. Those affected are particularly sensitive to light, or the lack of it. With the winter months lasting a good portion of the year here, we all must be aware of the affect the lack of light can have on the human mind. The lack of sun in the summer mother here in northern Minnesota can have a great affect on many individuals and go unseen. There are many early warning signs and mental health wellness strategies to help with this disorder.
Being aware of these warning signs is important to help look out for society today. A couple options for help can be: tanning, taking a vitamin D supplement (the main vitamin we receive from the sun), watch what you eat, limit alcohol and caffein, exercise, and/or possibly take a vacation to warmer weather.
Positive mental health is important to society because it allows individuals to see their full potential, cope with life, work productively, and give back to the community. This in return leading to a positive environment for the a well functioning society to form around.
Being informed on what seasonal affective disorder is all about, and becoming informed on the steps of to take to make positive out of one’s mental health, will lead to s society living a healthy lifestyle.
